So, Rosie is determined (sort of) to divorce her bullying buffoon of a husband, when what'dya know, he ups and dies in mysterious circumstances, implicating Rosie.Every character in the book is drawn larger than life - slightly (well, more than slightly) exaggerated. So the story reads like one of those old plays that is almost a farce, where everyone is over-acting their part madly, to get their point accross. It shouldn't work at all - but it does! Somehow Catherine Alliott manages to just draw the line the right side of farcical, so the book ends up humorous - in fact laugh out loud at times - without being ridiculous. You have the "hooray-Henry" type of upper-class idle party-circuit types, the rosy-cheeked, ample-bosomed village gossips, the ethereally beautiful but unbelievably horrible wife of Our Hero - Rosie's landlord, the dark & brooding famous Artist, Rosie's quite batty, fluttery & blatantly social climbing mother, and her quiet, long-suffering, sensible father - oh, and lets not forget the lady police inspector, such a nasty & unfeeling piece she's referred to as Steel Knickers!. There are some truly hilarious moments. Will be looking for more of Catherine Alliott.
